Why Did you Watch the Royal Wedding?
So why am I blogging about the Royal Wedding? Like many others, some estimate upwards of two billion, I set my alarm clock for very early this morning so I wouldn’t miss a second of the wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton. It’s sounds funny saying it that way so I suppose William & Kate (or Cate) will suffice. Besides my obvious curiosity of the grandeur, the multitude of details, Catherine’s – Sarah Burton of the Alexander McQueen fashion house designed dress and the very cool Royal Air Force Jets fly-over, I’m a wedding filmmaker so of course I couldn’t miss it. The fact that my Mother happens to be British made it a no-brainer.
Watching the Royal Wedding today, which is literally a Wedding Film (some mistakenly refer to it as a Wedding Video), I found myself transfixed on fashion, tradition, reactions and the actual sounds of the event. Even though I was focused on the logistics of how it was captured in reality I was watching the wedding of William and Kate just like everyone else.
I remember a similar experience almost thirty years ago being glued to my parents TV as Prince Charles and Lady Diana exchanged vows in what, at that time, was dubbed the wedding of the century. To me what makes that wedding so great is that everyone can still experience it today. Yes there were millions of beautiful still images taken. My Mother even has a commemorative plate! I was moved by hearing the beautiful music played in the Church, I loved watching the reactions of the people lining the route as well as the guests at the wedding, I had a much better vantage point than any person who traveled to London because the television coverage was very comprehensive, and most importantly, it was apparent to me the historical value of this once in a lifetime event. The wedding of William and Kate conjured-up the very same reactions as did Diana and Charles. My experience of today’s wedding is exactly the same.
Can you imagine how much William and Kate and their families are looking forward to seeing their wedding? Just like all weddings their experience today was an absolute whirlwind, as it’s supposed to be. They literally missed the majority of their wedding as most couples do. But they shouldn’t fret. Their wedding film is already online captured for eternity. Their children will be able to experience the wedding as if they were there. Isn’t that magic!
If you had a wedding film of your parents or grandparents wouldn’t that also be magic? The reason I am a wedding filmmaker is because I understand the intrinsic value of capturing the beauty of family, the intensity of emotion, and the history of tradition. David [DMS] – DMS Video Productions.
